About Bleach

The series behind the character

Bleach is an anime and manga series from Japan. The anime (still running) was adapted from the manga and is now almost 100 episodes long. The manga, originally by the shounen mangaka Kubo Taito (also known as Kubo Tite) and currently runs in Weekly Jump, a weekly magazine the publishes new chapters of popular shounen manga series. The manga series has also now been compiled into 23 volumes in tankoubon form.

The Bleach franchise doesn't just stop at anime and manga. The anime has been extended to 2 OAVs and is now being made into a movie. Furthermore, Bleach has been made into popular PS2 and PSP games. For two summers in a row, Bleach seiyuu (voice actors) have hosted the Soul Sonic event. Bleach B Station is a weekly radio show that features Bleach seiyuu in half hour segments, hosted permanently by Morita Masakazu (plays Kurosaki Ichigo) with monthly rotating guest seiyuu from the anime series.

So after all that, you don't know anything about Bleach except that it makes quite a lot of moolah. Well, there's a reason why that is and that's because the story and characters are quite good. The main character of Bleach is Kurosaki Ichigo. He's just a regular high school student living in Karakura town (oh, somewhere in good 'ol Japan) who can see... ghosts. Yes, ghosts. He is a particular human who has high spiritual power. Not only can see he ghosts, he can talk to them and become a medium for them.

So, as any other main character, strange events starts happening around Ichigo and our series begins. A Shinigami from the Soul Society, Kuchiki Rukia, comes to Karakura town on orders from above to slay a hollow lurking in the area. However, something seems to be stopping her from detecting the exact location of the hollow. She steps into Ichigo's room (albeit through the wall) and ponders the whereabouts of the monster when Ichigo sees her (remember he can see spirits and souls). He confronts Rukia and of course she is surprised a human is able to see her. While Rukia explains her situation to Ichigo, his family downstairs is attacked by the hollow Rukia is tracking. It turns out that hollows are attracted to humans with a high concentration of spiritual powers (it's what they eat) and Ichigo is a clear target. In order to save his family, Ichigo must defeat the hollow. However his puny human self is powerless against the monster, therefore he agrees to Rukia's idea of taking half her Shinigami powers to become a Shinigami himself. After this event, Ichigo takes the duties of a Shinigami and starts destroying Hollows. The plot thickens as the Soul Society gets involved in things.
